The formula
- Annual salary → hourly rate: Annual ÷ (Hours per week × Weeks per year)
- Hourly rate → annual salary: Hourly × Hours per week × Weeks per year
- Weekly pay: Hourly × Hours per week
- Monthly pay: Annual ÷ 12
- Bi-weekly pay: Annual ÷ 26
Standard full-time work assumes 2,080 hours per year (40 hours × 52 weeks). If you get paid time off, your effective working weeks are lower but your annual salary stays the same — the calculator handles this when you enter PTO weeks.

Frequently asked questions
$25 an hour is how much a year?
At 40 hours per week and 52 weeks per year, $25/hour equals $52,000 per year, or $4,333 per month and $1,000 per week.
$50,000 a year is how much an hour?
A $50,000 annual salary works out to $24.04 per hour at 40 hours per week and 52 weeks per year.
What is the difference between salary and hourly?
Salaried employees receive a fixed annual amount regardless of hours worked, and often receive benefits like paid time off and health insurance. Hourly employees are paid per hour worked, may receive overtime (1.5× rate above 40 hours/week in the US), but typically have less predictable income.
How many hours are in a work year?
A standard full-time work year is 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks). Some employers calculate based on 2,000 hours (50 weeks) to account for two weeks of unpaid time off.
Does this include taxes?
No. This calculator shows gross pay only. Your actual take-home pay will be lower after federal income tax, state tax, Social Security, and Medicare. Use a paycheck calculator for your state to estimate net pay.
How do I calculate my hourly rate for a freelance project?
Freelancers should target an hourly rate that covers not just working hours, but also admin time, taxes, insurance, and unpaid time off. A common rule of thumb: aim for 2-3× the hourly rate of a comparable salaried position.
